Around the Courts – 13th May

East Fremantle visit Katanning

A group of 10 East Fremantle players travelled to Katanning to compete in the annual    “ Frog on the Log “ Trophy tournament over the weekend of 4/5 May. The first trophy in 2021 was won by Katanning & successfully retained by them  in 2022 & 2023. So East Fremantle was very keen to return home with the trophy this year.

Very good Golf Croquet  was played over the 2 days with many close matches. The competition was accompanied by super hospitality & catering from the Katanning club members, thoroughly enjoyed by all.

East Fremantle was delighted to be victorious, winning the tournament 6 – 4 matches.
The overall champion individual player was  Keryl Gorton (EF) with Greg Jessop (K) the runner up.

The photos sent through show a few action shots, Keryl Gorton the individual champion, David Fardon receiving the “Frog on the Log” trophy from Trevor Kowald, President of Katanning CC & Des Boxall, the Tournament Manager and a group shot of all players.

Gateball Comes to Geraldton

In late April a party of 8 Gateball players from the East Fremantle CC travelled up to Geraldton to introduce Gateball to a very interested group of members of the Geraldton CC.

After a welcome by Croquetwest President Terry Brown who had been playing in the Geraldton Open GC Singles tournament over the weekend, there was a brief introduction to the origins  & the basic elements of the game. This was followed by coaching those skills unique to Gateball, especially “sparking”  & a short demonstration match by the East Fremantle players.

Geraldton members were keen to get into action, so a series of games were played with a mixture of Geraldton & East Fremantle members with other EF members as referees & coaches.

Over 2 sessions, morning & afternoon some 15 Geraldton players had the opportunity to try out Gateball & the response was very positive. A kit of Gateball equipment, sticks, balls, gates & watches supplied by ACA were left with Geraldton to experiment further with the game.

The Croquetwest Gateball Coordinator is Megan Fardon and any clubs interested in a similar introductory session are asked to make contact with Megan on 0403981866.

Individual players who are interested in trying out Gateball are invited to join East Fremantle members who play on a Sunday afternoon.
