Around the Courts 1st November

Well, it was a quiet weekend on the courts with club play taking priority. I must admit though come November, my focus is usually directed towards another turf event.

Around this time each year I receive a birthday card from my federal member of parliament and once again, Nola never disappointed. She kindly reminded that 60 years ago, apart from the significance of me entering this world, a few other important things happened;

  • Rod Laver won the Men’s singles at Wimbleton
  • The Morris Mini was launched in Australia at a RRP tag of $996.
  • Hawthorn defeated Footscray in the VFL Grand Final
  • Oral contraceptives were first sold in Australia and
  • Lord Fury won the Melbourne Cup.

What she failed to mention was that:

Tom Howat (Vic) won the Australian Open Association Singles (he won 9 in all)

J Muir won the ACA Bronze Medal

and M Parry won the WA Open Singles

Another significant event occurred on Sunday with Michael Murphy handing over the AC Events Secretary role baton to Rob Bowling.

Michael has donated much of his time and energy in recent years to helping make all our croquet experiences that much better. Apart from all the administrative work he does behind the scenes (Treasurer 2011-16 & 2018-20), he is a chef extraordinaire and has achieved legendary status at Forrest Park for his sausage rolls and the catering he does for their sundowners.

With retirement looming, Michael said he is hoping to spend more time on the courts and hopefully, if he is reading this, perfecting the ultimate gluten free sausage roll!

Croquet Playing Achievements:

  • 2014 Mt Lawley Div 4 Singles
    2018 Marjorie Parry Star
  • 2018 Div 2 Doubles with Sandy Boon
