Beginning in 2007, the most improved Association Player for the past season has been presented with the Bill Barnes Award. For many of us, however, we know little about Bill’s contribution to croquet and the impact he had on others.
As usual, my first point of call for all things historical is Marty. He noted the following:
- Bill was a physiotherapist by trade.
- He injured his arm in a car crash and had to retire early.
- He played many sports, largely self taught and once mastered, moved onto another one.
- He was my coach when I first started.
- He loved to coach anyone who wanted to improve, anywhere, anytime.
Bill also had a distinguished playing record.
