Australian Masters Games

Today sees the start of the Masters Games which is being held at various venues throughout Perth. Nedlands will be the centre of my attention, as they are hosting the croquet events. Good luck to all the competitors.

Croquetwest GC – State Open Men’s and Ladies’ Singles

It was fantastic to see so many players making their way to Bunbury for the long weekend to participate in two of our major events. This year we tinkered with the format a little and it seemed to work well. The Match Committee welcomes feedback about any event we run and so please drop us a line at any time if you have any feedback/suggestions on how we can improve your croquet experience.

Fantastic weather, great company and hard fought games – a great way to spend a weekend. Mind you, after 19 games I’m feeling a tad weary. My hat definitely goes off to Robyn, Dianne, Joyce and Judith; however, who are now in Perth for the Masters Games. Seven straight days of croquet!

Janine McHardy put in a magnificent performance to win the Ladies’ title for the 3rd time losing only one game over the tournament. Runner up was Robyn Dart. Joyce Carbone and Judith Nicholls settled on an honourable draw for third after splitting two titanic 7-6 games.

The Men’s Title was won for the second year in a row by Gary Phipps. Martin Clarke played superbly all weekend, finishing on top of the block and was runner up in the final. Brett McHardy finished 3rd with Bob James 4th. Bob had a great tournament and is now playing off a 2!

On Monday, we also held the Consolation Event which was won by Michael Trefusis-Paynter. Upon receiving his prize, Michael proudly passed on his award to Helen Quicke, whom he described as the most promising GC player he has seen for a long time.

These events don’t just happen and so I would like to Rob and John for organising the tournament, Moorabinda for hosting (what a great place to play croquet), the individual members of the club for giving up their courts for three days, all the helpers in the kitchen, the ground staff, the spectators and to all the players for making it such a great weekend.
