A nice change in the weather and no better way to spend a Saturday afternoon and evening than celebrating young Frank’s 90th birthday at the club.
Gosnells Easter Egg Competition
Today March 10th 2024 saw the Easter Bunny Comp at Gosnells being played.
A fun tournament, no HC cards.
Players scored by Easter Eggs. Each player was given 15 eggs at the start of play.
If you lost, you gave the opposition the difference in the score. Eg, if you lost 5-7 you gave your oppos 2 eggs. The player at the end of the day is the winner.
The winner was Eric McCurdy with a total 31 eggs and in second place was Alison Adeley with 27 eggs.
There was a sumptuous lunch with served Salads, sausages and cheese cakes.
The Bunny tail belongs to Ros, a visitor from Scotland.
The weather was perfect and everyone had an enjoyable day.
Dunsborough Ricochet Doubles
A full field of 8 pairs contested the Dunsborough event again this year.
And Judith sent these not long ago. A bit of rain around.
Another addition to the “Must play there list”
The Corfu Croquet Club has been given the ticket of approval by the WCF as a Recognised Croquet Organisation (RCO) .
The club, based near Gouvia on Corfu, has been established for many years. It has four lawns, and regularly hosts tournaments open to visitors, both in GC and AC. The thriving club has an active membership who play mainly GC and One Ball, with just a small amount of AC played.
Over the past few weeks, I have been busily collating as much information as possible about the players who have represented WA at the EIRE Cup. In all, 101 individuals have had the honour of making their debuts for Western Australia.
A special thanks to the individuals and clubs who have taken the time to scour their club cupboards and walls looking for those illusive photos for me. They have unearthed some cracking images of times past. Andrew and Co from Bayswater, Wendy and Michael from Nedlands, Kay from Geraldton, Megan from East Fremantle and the team at Como who have the most organised photo collection I have come across.
Of the 101 players, there are only 13 individual images left to locate. If you happen to come across one, or have a better image of the players than the ones we have found, I would love to get a copy so that I can improve on what we have.
I have also rearranged the website a little and have a new History section so be sure to check it out.
Finally, a note of thanks to Marty who is the font of all knowledge when it comes to croquet. We are indeed lucky to have someone who has taken the time to catalogue our history.
Martin Clarke is representing WA once again, his 4th appearance overall and we wish him well. This is the youngest pictures I could find of him. The one on the right is from 1997.

Winner of Swiss Event below – Allan Hardingham from Dunsborough.
Sorrento Doubles
Jan and Terry (Team Craddock) prevailed at today’s very closely contested club championships. Wendy Price and Janice Davidson (Sister Act) were runners-up (again); with the “Hurt Team” (Amanda and Larry) placing third.
It was a VERY exciting competition to watch and no-one could predict the winners before the last shot was played. Also, thanks go out to Di for refereeing and Sandy for the setting up.
Moorabinda hosted the annual Country Singles and it was great to see players from such a wide variety of clubs participating.
Being a long weekend, accommodation was difficult to find. Don’t ever let this put you off entering though as clubs can often help organise a billet.
We saw some great perfomances with many matches being decided on the 19th hoop. A few highlights, Barrie going through undefeated and dropping his handicap by 2, John winning at his first outing in A Grade and a marathon of rocqueting between Dawn and Les.
Belmont club held a full day of coaching and tips on Saturday, with Kim and Megan Reynolds.
Members received stroke coaching in single ball shots, hoop running, bombards and stop shots.
Dodging the rain, additional topics included faults, crushes, hoop setting, etiquette, community engagement, how to run a ‘Have-a-go’ day, advertising tips and some fun games to introduce beginners to. Of particular interest were the slo-mo footage taken on site of double tap and crush shots. The club also received a ‘show-bag’ of croquet goodies.
It was a full day of varied activities!

York – Croquet Challenge
York Croquet Club held its annual Croquet Challenge during February. The challenge which is a doubles competition and open to anyone who is not a Club member, was played between 8 teams.
After 7 rounds of fun and competitive croquet , the 3 top teams ( Bendigo Bank, Rippeyhill and Cheeky Mallets ) were tied on 5 wins each therefore the winner was decided on net points ( points for less points against ) with Bendigo Bank winning with +22 and the other two teams tied for second place with +9.
Congratulations to Robin and Selina
Pictured with Club President Kay Anderson are Robin Milner and Selina Carmichael from Bendigo Bank receiving the Croquet Challenge trophy and the traditional block of Toblerone.
Thank you to Eric for running the Challenge again and to all the participants for taking part and making for a really enjoyable 4 weeks of croquet.
Bunbury Central Croquet Club hosted a social event last Thursday 22 Feb for the Clontarf Foundation.
Mentors from the Foundation were attending a conference in Bunbury for mentors from Perth down to Albany and inbetween. They arrived at our club about 5pm and had a BBQ then played a knock out competition amongst themselves.

The weather was much kinder to us this weekend and no doubt everyone appreciated the cooler conditions on court.
Annual AC State Team vs Barbarian
Sunday saw the annual State Team vs the Barbarian take place at Como and it was an excellent hit out for everyone involved. Many thanks to Como for hosting and we wish our State Team all the best for the upcoming carnival in Tasmania.
Three Belmont Park Croquet Club players (Croquetwest President and President of Belmont Park Croquet Club, Terry Brown with Janet Fuller and Christine Trembath) travelled to Brisbane (Queensland) to board the Coral Princess cruise ship and cruised around New Zealand were paired up with other players from Australia and played in the Sailors Cup at 6 NZ Croquet clubs.
Terry, with partner Joan (from Bribie Island QLD) were 3rd even though they had 5 more hoops than the winners.
Christine came 7th and Janet came 8th out of 14 pairs of players, not a bad effort from WA.
Terry and Joan also got 2nd in the consolation competition.
Next year’s Sailors Cup is all sold out already.
Well done WA (Belmont Park Croquet Club) and thank you New Zealand.
