Notice from Victoria Park Croquet Club

Re: Cancellation of Flexi-Tournament Event – November 2006

It is with a great deal of reluctance that the Club has had to cancel the Flexi-Tournament scheduled for 25^th/26^th November 2006.

Entrants will be, or have been, notified and entry fees will be refunded.

The decision to cancel has been forced upon the Club by the building work currently underway on the Clubrooms.  The work is substantial, involving the replacement of the building’s footings and resulting in the floor level being raised.  The work is being organized and paid for by the Council, which we are grateful for, but means that we have no ability to influence the schedule of work or contract conditions.

The building is currently far from serviceable (walls and floor boards removed, trench between ground and doors, electrical safety questionable, no water, etc) and represents an Occupational Safety and Health hazard (ie. it is a building site!)

Our decision to cancel was based on the following:

• There is no firm schedule of building work and our level of confidence that the building will be serviceable in time for the competition is low.

Previous time estimates given to us have proven to be highly optimistic and we had expected the building work to have been completed by now (end of October).

• If the building were not ready in time for the event, there would be many OS&H and insurance implications to running the event under such circumstances, quite apart from the potential lack of shelter, electricity and water !
• We could hope that the building will be ready just in time for the competition, but we feel that it would be unfair to entrants for us to “cross our fingers” but potentially have to cancel the event at short notice.

Our apologies to the entrants, and we hope we have not caused you too much inconvenience or disappointment.

(The Club would also like to foreshadow the closure of its courts from the middle of December to the end of January, due to planned renovation of the greens.)
