WEST AUSTRALIAN CROQUET ASSOCIATION

 

SELECTION POLICY

Revised    28/3/08

 

Selectors are to be autonomous with regard to the performance of their duties but are subject to the requirements of Section D.2(III)

 

A. Objectives

 

Identify and select players for the West Australian Croquet Association (WACA)

 

  1. State Squad - Association and Golf Croquet
  2. State Team – Association and Golf Croquet
  3. ACA Bronze Medal Event
  4. Marjorie Parry Star Tournament
  5. Other squads/events when, and if, deemed necessary.
  6. Specific responsibilities   e.g. – State team Captain and Vice-captain.
  7. Most improved male and female players

 

B. Process

                    

Declaration of interests

 

Any potential conflicts of interest between a selector and players shall be :

  1. made known at the first Selection Committee meeting of the season .                 
  2. recorded for use by Selection Committee members only and the record destroyed at the end of the season.
  3. revised during the season.

 

Examples of conflict of interest:

  1. A selector is related to a player
  2. A selector is a player’s personal coach.
  3. A selector and a player are involved in an on-going quarrel / dispute –for private , croquet- related or other reason(s).

 

The Selection Committee will adhere strictly to the criteria for selection but the committee  may make discretionary judgements on consideration of players who are:

 

  1. returning to active play after a break of 12 months or more.

 

  1. newly arrived and/or returned to reside in WA within the 12 months prior to selection.

 

  1. heavily committed to national and international croquet obligations.

 

  1. returning to competitive play after illness or injury  or family and/or work considerations.

 

C. Selection Criteria

 

Development Squad – Association Croquet

 

    All players who wish to be considered for selection in the Development Squad should :

 

  1. have the ability to make breaks of a minimum of 4 hoops on a regular basis in club and/or competition  advanced play.
  2. have  knowledge of, and show that they try implement in their play, the tactical
  3. theory of break-making as outlined on pages 44-45 of the ACA Level 1 CoachingManual ( 2004 ).
  4. have the ability to play all the croquet shots as listed on page 25 of the ACA Level 1 Coaching Manual ( 2004 ).       
  5. be prepared and able to play up to four (4) games per day for a minimum of two (2) consecutive days in tournaments.
  6. be committed to playing a minimum of  fifteen (15) advanced singles games in WACA or WACA approved tournaments in the 12 month period in the year of selection in the squad.
  7. be able to accept observation and critical analysis of their tournament play by squad coaches.
  8. be a registered player with a  WACA handicap

 

State Squad – Association Croquet

 

All players who wish to accept selection in the State Squad must:

 

  1. be prepared to play up to four (4) games a day for a minimum of  two (2) consecutive days in WACA tournaments and  three (3) games a day for five (5) consecutive days in the Eire Cup competition.
  2. have played at least  twenty (20) advanced singles games in the twelve months prior to the date of selection, from play in appropriate events from this list.

 

·        State singles championships of player’s handicap range (Division)

·        WACA Men’s Open Singles

·        WACA Women’s Open Singles

·        Ida Thorpe Memorial Trophy

·        Forrest Park Div 2 Singles

·        Northam Trophy –Div 3 singles

·        Any club advanced singles tournament open to players from other clubs and complies with WACA Tournament Regulations

·        ACA Bronze Medal Event

·        Marjorie Parry Star

·        McBride / Thorogood / Champ of Champs

 

          Note:-   Exemptions from play may be granted to players by           

                   the selection committee based on work commitments and/ or

                   travel / accommodation considerations.

 

3. be a registered player with a WACA handicap.

 

State Team - Association Croquet

 

The following criteria will be used to assist selectors in their assessment of players for inclusion in the State Team.     

 

  1. players displaying aggressive croquet tactics and strategies in match play
  2. players demonstrating a sound knowledge of the 9-12-5 game as a foundation for their play
  3. break engineering and break-making ability.
  4. attempts to engage in multiple peeling in games.
  5. success rate in triple peeling
  6. tactical knowledge of advanced play, particularly in pegged-out games.
  7. performance under pressure in competition and during squad practices.
  8. understanding, acceptance and use of appropriate sport psychology principles, for example goal setting, focus, stress, control.

             

Other criteria for players -  for selection in all squads

  1. willingness to abide by instructions from coach(es) in squad practices and squad match play.
  2. willingness to assist the squad coach(es) in developing a  
  3. collaborative working relationship amongst all squad players.
  4. attitude towards other players, officials and coaches.
  5. attendance at designated practice sessions unless exempted by coaches.
  6. advice from the State Coach shall be taken into consideration but will not, in itself, form the basis for decision- making. 
  7. player’s ACA National Ranking

 

GOLF CROQUET SQUAD

 

All players who wish to accept selection into this Squad must:

  1. be prepared to play a minimum of 6 (six) games a day for a minimum of 2 (two) consecutive days in WACA approved Tournaments, and a maximum of 9 (nine) games a day for 5 (five) consecutive days in the Interstate Cup if selected in the State Team.
  2. have played in level singles competition, which along with current ranking, will be taken into consideration when selecting.
  3. have skills in single ball shots needed for success in the game.
  4. be prepared to accept observation and critical analysis of their competitive play.
  5. endeavour to further improve their playing skills and understanding of tactics.
  6. be a Registered Player with a WACA Golf Handicap
  7. be prepared to travel interstate if selected in the State Team

 

D.  Removal of player(s) from squads or teams:-

                              

1.    A player may be removed from a squad or team if, after consultation between the coach(es) and  Selection Committee, a decision is made that said player has not satisfied the requirements of any part of  C.  3. on more than one occasion in the life of a current squad.

                            

2.    Appeal process:- 

 

                              I.      The only grounds for appeal are that the selection policy was not properly followed and / or implemented . 

All matters relating to an appeal adjudication are strictly confidential. The appellant, the appointed working group members and the      

WACA Management Committee members are the only persons who will be privy to the Information.

 

                          II.      Any player who is not satisfied with the outcome of the selection process with regard to squads, teams or events may enact an appeal within 14 days of the announcement of the decision against which the appeal is being made.

Written notice of the appeal is to be lodged with the WACA Secretary citing the specific selection criteria which the appellant believes have been breached by the Selection Committee. 

 

                       III.      Management Committee will appoint a three person working group from the list of registered players to examine and rule on the appeal and then present a written report to the Management Committee citing all reasons for any decisions. This working group may consult with the Selection Committee as part of the decision-making process.

 

                        IV.      Management Committee reserves the right to amend any decisions.

The player will receive written notification of the decision of the Management Committee within four weeks of the appeal being lodged.

Legal advice may be sought by the Management Committee in regard to any appeal. Any costs for such legal advice are to be borne by the West Australian Croquet Association. 

 

3. Appeal outcomes for player(s):

 

(1)Successful appeal : the player is included in the squad, event or team,

whichever is the case.

(2)Unsuccessful appeal : the Selection Committee’s decision stands.

 

Australian Bronze Medal Event ( refer ACA Handbook )

1. Six – ten (6-10) players invited to participate.

2. Selection of players :

    Results from singles games from tournaments listed below, along with a player’s

    position on the Australian Ranking list will be considered in the selection process.

 

·        International Championship events

·        Australian Croquet Championships – Eire Cup and National events

·        State Championships

 

            3. A seeded draw will be used based on the player’s position on the Australian Ranking

                list  (derived from the World Ranking list) at the time that the draw is being done.

 

            4. Winner must be prepared to represent WA in the Australian Gold Medal event at the

                National Croquet Championships.

 

Marjorie Parry Star

 

Donated by Marjorie Parry in 1969 for an individual event for encouragement for selected promising players.

1.    Six-ten (6-10) players be invited to participate.

2.    WACA handicap of invited players to be two and a half ( 2.5 ) or more.

3.    Previous winners of this event or the Australian Bronze Medal are ineligible for selection.

 

Sheila McDonald Trophy

 

Most improved female player of the year.

Selection to be based on index improvement from results in championship singles events in the twelve month period from July 1st – June 30th  yearly.

 

Bill Barnes Trophy

 

Most improved male player of the year.

Selection to be based on index improvement from results in championship singles events in the twelve month period from July 1st – June 30th yearly.
