Around the Courts August 15th

A mixed bag weather wise over the weekend. The clouds opened Saturday; however on Sunday it was picture perfect. The major events held were the GC Champion of Champions at Cambridge and the Gosnells’ Doubles Championship.

Croquetwest Champion of Champions

A field of 12 battled it out at Cambridge for the honour of City Champion, Country Champion and Champion of Champions.

  • Jan Craddock – Sorrento
  • Torben Bak – Victoria Park
  • Matthew Whitfield – Cambridge
  • Brett McHardy – Forrest Park
  • Paul Christmass – Geraldton
  • Robyn Dart – Busselton
  • Brain Scott – Dunsborough
  • Eric Ayling – York
  • Alan Sands – Como
  • Janine McHardy – Belmont
  • Sue Anderson – Gosnells
  • Gary Phipps – Moorabinda

The format for the event was

Saturday: 8am for 8.30am start; six untimed 13-point games

Sunday: 7.30 for 8am start; five untimed 13-point games to be followed by a 19-point final between first and second

After the preliminary rounds, all players had tasted some success but it was Brett McHardy (10 wins from 11 games) and Paul Christmass (8 wins) who earnt the right to play off in the final and what a final it was. Both players showed all their skills and went hoop for hoop throughout. Neither player was ever able to get more than one hoop in front at any stage and a nineteenth hoop always looked highly likely.

No, Gary wasn’t betting on the horses – sending game updates to Marty!
