Around the Courts – 5th December

Another busy weekend on the courts highlighted by the running of the Croquetwest State B Grade Singles.

GC State B Grade Singles

A terrific field of 20 talented players contested the State B Grade Singles on the weekend.

The event was held at two venues. Block A – Higgins Park and Block B – Forrest Park. The finals were held at Higgins Park.

The results of the block stages proved how competitive the event was.

Everyone went back to Higgins Park for the finals and it was Steve Newbold who eventually came out on top. Congratulations Steve on a great effort.

Marcus provided the following comments:

Winner, Steve Newbold – Halls Head. Lost only one game in block play. Played very intelligently, highly accurate, and with nerves of steel. Beat a determined and dogged Des Boxall (Katanning) in his semi.

Runner up – Ed Parravicini (The Macaroni Pony – Forrest Park). 5th with one game left in block play on Sunday morning, a resounding win launched him into the finals. Beat a luckless Brian Scott who’s excellent form through block play left him at the crucial stage.

The block play at Higgins Park was oustanding, the competition fierce and every game hard fought. At both venues six players could have made the finals with a game to go.

Steve Newbold spoke for all when he acknowledged how hard he had to fight, and how the opposition drove him to play his best shots for two tough days.

Many thanks to our host clubs and their members with a special shout out to our tournament managers in John and Bethwyn.

Geraldton – Anne Bunter Handicap Doubles

This weekend the Geraldton Croquet Club conducted their handicap doubles competition. It is great to see this event continue to grow in strength with 8 pairs battling it out over the weekend.

From Kay:

This weekend, the Bunter Golden Mallet Handicap Doubles matches were played on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Great weather, a very competitive group of participants including several new players pushing those more experienced in the game of Golf Croquet.

Bob Imray and Doug Lee were the winners with six match wins out of seven.

Runnersup were Charley and Jan MacSween with five wins out of seven.

Dunsborough once again posted some terrific photos from their courts last Thursday.

Great to see so much happening! Bowls and croquet happening together.

Marty Spotted in Albany

It seems like every other week, Marty is off again touring the west and visiting another croquet club. This week it was Gomm Park’s turn to partake in some coaching.

These coaching sessions are always well received and I believe the next country event will be in Bunbury at Moorabinda in early January.

I wonder if Marty will ever start off his sessions with his own theme song?

Hot Summer night
With a slight breeze swirling around
And the grass on the ground smelling sweet

Out on the road
In the middle of a town
And to the sound of that croquet beat

Sits a manicured lawn
Where there ain’t no trees
And that croquet club
Telling you and me

It’s love, they all say
Marty Clark’s Travelling Croquet Show
Pack up the nibblies
And grab your mallets
And everyone goes
‘Cause everyone knows
It’s Marty Clark’s travellin’ show
