Visiting Players achieving Success in WA

With the success of Peter Sinclair in Mondays B Grade One-Day Singles event, it sparked Marty’s historical interest and so he set about finding all the winners of Croquet West events who have played as a representative of another State or Country.

1914 – WA Open AC Doubles – J.Holdsworth and G.H.Gordon both of New South Wales

1914 – WA Handicap AC Singles – J.Holdsworth of New South Wales

Mrs J.Holdsworth had learnt croquet in Kalgoorlie but had moved to Sydney with her Husband, from there she toured the country playing various events often partnering with Mr G.H.Gordon also of NSW. The picture below is from 1918 when they were successful in NSW.

1994 – Ida Thorpe AC Singles – Don Reyland of New Zealand

An accomplished New Zealander, who occasionally played in Australian events. Don became a Croquet New Zealand life member in 2021. Striking Shot! Newspaper Article

2010 – WA Open AC Doubles – S.Forster of Victoria { partnering Martin Clarke }

2010 – WA One Day AC Singles – S.Forster of Victoria

Stephen Forster was visiting as practice for the MacRobertson Shield in England, later in 2010.

2015 – WA Open AC Singles – C.Bassett of New South Wales

Claire Bassett was playing the event along with other Interstate players as a lead up into the Patrons Trophy being held at Moorabinda, she is the only interstate player to win the WA state singles.

Yes, that was the AC State Open Singles held at the Nedlands Croquet Club this last weekend.
Claire Bassett NSW and Martin Clarke WA, played off in the final best of 3 matches. Claire was victorious 26-9, 26TP-9 and in doing so became the first non WA player to win this event.”

2016 – WA Open AC Doubles – T.Bassett of New South Wales partnering Ross Marshall

Trevor Bassett was also here for the Patrons Trophy event.

2023 – WA B Grade GC One Day Singles – P.Sinclair of New South Wales  

First Interstate winner of a WA GC event.
