Golf Croquet Problem Corner

Over the coming weeks I will be posting some scenarios that were first published in the Croquet Victoria monthly magazine “Malletsports” in about 2014.

These come courtesy of John van der Touw. As he explains; “I sent scenarios to some top players and asked them what shot they would play in the situation. I also asked some ordinary players what they would play because I thought that the best tactical option would depend on the skill level of the striker (and their opponent).”

I first met John at the GC Open Doubles and Singles event last year. Along with his partner, Richard Parks, they successfully defended their doubles title.

National Titles

  • GC Open Singles 2014,2015
  • GC Open Doubles 2012,2014,2019,2021
  • GC Men’s Singles 2012, 2016
  • GC Gold Medal 2014

What would you do playing blue in the scenario below? After you’ve decided, have a look at what a panel of experts thought.

The balls are represented in the diagrams by the following letters:

B = Blue, R = Red, K = Black, Y = Yellow.

The circles drawn around the hoops have radius 1 yard, 2 yard, etc., and the playing side is at the bottom of the page
