Early Residence based clubs in WA

Back in the early days of croquet in Western Australia, clubs could be established and affiliated on private residences.

None of this exists today and the concept probably appears foreign to current clubs and players.

But non the less they had a role to play in the metro area and in country regions.

All of the following played in the pennant competition at some stage, most for only a year or two.

Euston was probably the most influential, as it was a funding member of the West Australian Croquet Association and won the 1906 metro pennant competition.

Founded in 1905 it was located in Havelock Street, West Perth.

Other residence based clubs were;

Wanderers –  Founded 1907, had no set home ground and played wherever they could, technically they were based in Hay St West and they won the metro pennant in 1910.

KingstonFounded 1909, Kingston Ave, West Perth.

El Cerda1909 to 1911, Likely from the Spanish and pronounced El Therda, roughly translates to the Boar, located in Claremont at either Riley St or Goldsworthy Rd, the residence of the Saunders family. Claremont in those days had a lot of agricultural use, perhaps this was linked to a piggery ?

Alphington1907, Located at the Poultry sheds in Shenton St, Claremont.

Ashcliffe – 1907, Located on the corner of Proclamation St and Tate St in Subiaco.

Louisville1913, yet to determine the venue but was linked to the Saunders family again but also to the Reverend E. Makepeace who had previously played in Kalgoorlie.

Lakeside – 1905, Palmerston St, Northbridge

West Australian 1911, originally the West Australian Club, they had no home ground and played wherever they could, possibly used the WACA at some point, later they shared Mueller Park courts. It is possible they were the first WA club to affiliate to a higher body, this being the English Croquet Association. If so this would explain the historical confusion over when the Western Australian Croquet Association was formed. Interestingly Moorabinda also affiliated to the English Association.
